Belmont Shore Residents Association

MINUTES

EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING

February 10, 2011

The meeting was called to order by President Aileen Colon at 6:00 pm. The other members of the Executive Board present were: Elizabeth Borsting, Vice President Terence Endersen, John Forstrom, Marvin Jones, Secretary Jeff Miller, and Treasurer Robert O'Connor. Executive Board members Julie Dean, Adam Hattan, Jim Lazarus and Heidi Van Horn were absent. Twenty-six additional BSRA members and visitors were present.

Librarian Debi Gurley announced the "Literary Women" event scheduled for March 12 and the "Long Beach Reads One Book" campaign in April.

The meeting agenda and the minutes of the January 13 meeting were approved.

LBPD Commander Lisa Lopez reported numbers of several crime categories in the Shore in the preceding month. She gave updated information on these issues previously reported: burglary arrests, bike licensing ordinance revoked, graffiti occurrences, the closing of Evo Lounge, and security camera specifications.

President Colon announced Norman Turley, tonight's scheduled speaker, telephoned and canceled. He is the owner of the new business Dogz Bar and Grill, which will open soon in the former Evo Lounge location. He plans to speak at the March BSRA meeting.

Dede Rossi, Executive Director of the BSBA, reported the success of the recent Chocolate Festival and announced the upcoming scavenger hunt event. She said the recently closed business 5001 will be replaced with five separate businesses in that space.

Joe Toney from Third District Councilman Gary Delong's office reported these items: previously scheduled sidewalk repairs will begin soon, the traffic signal at Pomona Ave. and Second St. will be installed soon, DeLong plans to impose alcohol license conditions for the new business Dogz Bar and Grill, objectionable advertising flyers from Ripples have ceased, some abandoned pay phone booths will be removed, and a recent police sweep resulted in the arrest of twelve gang members. The Third District Neighborhoods meeting has been rescheduled to February 24.

There was a discussion of some problems at Panama Joe's: objectionable advertising flyers on view to passers-by, blocking of the sidewalk and objectionable language by patrons and smokers. Fabius Rizk, Panama Joe's manager, said he would address these problems directly and gave his phone number (714.325.8165) to contact him directly to deal with problems. Joe Toney from DeLong’s office asked Cmdr. Lopez for advice, and Lopez said that the public should call the police if the sidewalk is overcrowded or they see objectionable situations.  She said the City needs reported “calls for service” to document problems at bars, etc.

President Colon reported a traffic study will be conducted to address the issue of a traffic signal at Claremont Ave. and Second St.

Vice President Endersen reported this action of the recent Beach Committee meeting: the Marine Department will go forward with the planned merger of two of the beach parking lots and the installation of a new single meter to ease the payment process. He also noted the improvement of the Dog Beach signage.

Secretary Miller reported four membership renewals received. A motion was requested and approved to authorize payment of the annual fee of $15 for the domain name registration for the BSRA web site.

Treasurer O'Connor reported the checking account balance of $4,033.

President Colon reported the Parking Commission did not approve funding for the proposed "gateway" and advertising signs.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:25 pm.
